Social scientists have long attempted to develop a more complete understanding of why the national sentiment regarding sociopolitical issues are divided along ideological lines. Previous research has scrutinized how moral foundation theory reflects sociopolitical attitudes, but there is a lack of insight on the interaction taking effect when messages in individuals’ everyday life are couched in countless influences.  In order to assess how individuals process mass-mediated messages, this study measures the interdependence of framing effects, source cues, and political ideology that individuals use and recognize to shape attitudes. There is a disparity between ideologues that identify with either liberal or conservative socio-political attitudes, and how these groups communicate and receive messages ultimately influences attitude. This research measures the interaction of source cues and moral framing on socio-political attitudes of strong or moderate ideologues.

A SOCIAL-PSYCH EXPERIMENT

Ryan and Mack are both undergraduate students at Texas State University. Ryan is currently a senior majoring in general studies and is in the midst of his Independent Research Study. Mack is also a senior and is working to complete his applied sociology internship by fufilling the role of a research team member.

The goal of this research project is to qualify an experiment, test our hypotheses on a sample of Texas State students, and lay the groundwork for a peer-reviewed article to be published.

By applying for grants such as the Student Undergraduate Research Fund (SURF), we hope to gain access to the resources neccesary to test larger sample sizes and further the understanding of a diversified and practical population as it applies to the "real world."
